This is "A is for Aubrey" I made this one for Laura's niece. Turned out very cute - and I used corresponding fabric. Oooooo. It is machine appliqued. Machine quilted, with decorative stitching.
These blocks are pieced, and then appliqued to the back ground fabric. I quilted this on my home machine. Between the stars it is free motion quilted, and the border and edges are stitched in a zig-zag fashion. I also put some strategically place prairie points in few places around the border. I re-learned those at the Olathe quilt guild meeting. But I remember doing them as a child, with my mom.

I finally finished my Harry Potter quilt. It is done rather in the style of a Weasley. My kids tell me that I am most like Mrs Weasley - so why not go all the way. I think it is rather fun to go through each appliques piece, and figure out its link to the movies. Keep in mind, many of these designs were done prior to the movies being released, so they done all match the movie. I love this quilt. It is very bright, interesting, and heavy. Almost all the fabrics are fancy fabric, either satins, brochades, or drapery samples - oh and velvet. This is a very tactile quilts. And crooked. I don't think the Weasley's would mind how crooked it is, so I am not fixing it. The fabrics are quite slick - thats my story and I am sticking to it...I think I like Hedwig best, or the snitch. And yes, the sword of Gryffindor looks more like a dagger - just adapt, that is my logic. cr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-81577575137734457732011-05-11T10:54:00.000-07:002011-05-11T11:03:18.868-07:00Seans Quilt

Well, I finally finished another quilt. It is not a NEW Janome, its my new Janome, but I am very happy with it. Especially as I get a little better with it. I did some straight machine stitching for quilting as well as quite a bit of Free motion quilting. I only ripped out about half of it. Could probably have ripped out more, but at some point you just have to go on.

cr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-35322993049888328182011-02-14T08:56:00.001-08:002011-02-14T09:09:15.369-08:00Dad's Quilt

Here is the quilt top as it stands that I am making for my Dad. It is about a queen size - I think. I call in My Kansas Sampler. I made the blocks to represent things to me. There are 3 stars, for each of his kids. And the pieced blocks in the right side represent: the circle is a tire (for the Station), the one to the right is the Kansas Combines, the bottom left is the view driving out to his house, and the the fish - well, they are fish. There are also a variety of other blocks that I just played with that I liked, and in the center is a pheasant in flight. He is applique, on the botton left corner there are also 2 bobwhite quail. All of the fabric in this quilt is from Gramma Jo's stash. I love stash busting!!!

I have decided to also include a few pictures to show the disarray of my sewing room, it is a total disaster. I actually had the quilt made in time, but forgot to get pictures of it, so I am just not getting it posted. I do like the applique with a satin stitch, especially for the playful quilts, however I am experimenting with traditional applique on a quilt I am making for my father. I still have at least 8 quilts sitting out ready to quilt, but slowly one by one, I will get them finished. I am quilting a flannel one on my home machine now. But the drive to start piecing a new quilt frequently out-passions the desire to machine quilt. And machine quilting anything over a baby quilt hurts my back after a while - although, technically, none of my quilts are over baby quilt size - so that excuse fails.

I read somewhere that you should always use stripes in your quilts, Yeah, I like it. Of course, I still have 3 hanging ready to finish, at present I have about 11 UFOs - the deal with my UFOs though is that they are all out, piled around my room, in stages of disarray. The is no rhyme or reason to which quilts I am working on at any given time, some days I just feel like piecing, some days ironing, some days hand stitching, and everyday - I design. The back is almost as perfect as the front, actually, I do rather find it more interesting. The ladies at the quilt guild always show there quilts, then they turn them around and show the back, and say "oh I just threw the rest of the fabric together on the back..." Well laudeedau for them. Piecing that back easily took longer, and definitely more Math skills than the front ever did. This is a drawing that I had Kati due when I was in a textile's class at KU. After she made the drawing on a large sheet of butcher paper, I traced the image with black resist on cotton. Between the 2 of us we then painted it with thickened dyes. From the start I loved it. I loved it so much I was terrified to work on it. With the help of Kris Barlow, I put together the top, and decided to quilt it on a long arm. Kris taught me how to long-arm, and together we used the same drawing ideals that Kati used, and I quilted it. Yeah. I finished one of my little painted fabric quilts. I really, really wish the color was better. I absolutely love this one, except that the binding is uneven and the corners look funny on the binding....but with therapy....

I did free motion embroidery on the painted middle section, then the double border simply has a stitch in the ditch.

I am planning to enter a quilt or two in the Kaw Valley Quilt Show, what are your votes? I think I will go with the Geisha for sure...but then maybe a more traditional quilt..... I would definitely enter Scrabble, but it is currently in Oklahoma, so, that is okay.

Aunt Mary Ann wrote today, she has quilt fabric for me. I think I will print some pictures and send them to her, so that she can see I really will use it. So, over Spring Break I had to say good-bye to three different quilts, it has been quite an emotional journey.....

I finished the Jayhawk for Connie, so it went to live at her house. The good-bye wasn't so hard, since it was the 3rd Jayhawk quilt I made. Oh, and save your comments about March madness, it seems rather like Mayhem to me. My favorite Jayhawk is still Papa's though....

(I finally delivered Kaye her quilt. Let me tell you, that one was hard to give up. The kids want me to make another one, but I can't do that, in my world, the quilt is made for the owner...maybe I will just make one similar....)

and finally, I completed and delivered the Scrabble quilt. Yeah, it turned out pretty cool, and I am sure the bride and groom (Martha and Alex) enjoyed it. It looked really good, and I love the humor in it. In case you didn't know - Martha rather proposed to Alex in a game of Bananagrams - but I played off the scrabble aspect. The entire wedding reception followed the same theme so I was "right now!" or some other cool phrase.

I also finished Ian's quilt. I particularly liked the bright colors. Ian wanted a quilt for his "Duckie" but decided he was going to keep this one. He told me that my other quilts were nice, but this was my best one... okay it was adorable the way he said it, but didn't translate to blog very well.cr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-13356791969264638052010-02-11T13:54:00.000-08:002010-02-11T14:03:48.900-08:00Another Pair of Quilts

Here are another 2 quilts that I just finished. Most of these fabrics are hand dyed on Kona cotton - which is absolutely fabulous. I never know when I use my "special" fabrics how much quilting I should do, I don't want to draw attention away from the fabrics. At this point, I have made 2 full size, 2 throws, and 3 wall hanging quilts. The goal, besides that it is just fun, is to use up my fabric stash. And quite honestly, 6 quilts latter, and I still have crap-loads of fabric, but I think I have made some fabulous quilts. I even joined the Lawrence Quilt Guild - hoping to learn some new tricks.

I also have 4 quilts in the makings - but I ran out of batting, so I am just completing new tops - I will finish them as soon as I get more batting. She was my mom's mom. This was another hard time for me. I can't really say that I have recovered from Mom's passing, and now I have to say Good'bye to Gramma Jo. She and I had a complex relationship. I knew her when she was young enough to take me to World's of Fun, and she was there as an extra parent through high school and college, and she had become a source of inspiration for my marriage and parenting. And for some reason, I seem to be the only person in the world that she did not fight to pay for lunch or dinner.

The funeral itself was difficult because the topic of many conversations was condolensces for my mom, as well as for Gramma. But I made it through, and really enjoyed the time that I got to spend with my family. I really do have a great support group, though I rarely let them know that I need them. I need to work on that. The attached video is one that I made for the visitation. It shows how alive the woman really was. Well, I need to go for a bit, chat later. All the perp does is empty out the glove compartment, and take random items. Once they took my work bag that had a binder from school, a few papers, and my calendar. Once they took $4 - and once we found nothing missing. Bill's work truck was hit also, they took random items, and the last time, his work credit card (gas) they also took my CVS pharmacy - no value, its like a Dillons card. The last time, last week, we filed a police report, and talk to the neighbors, they all got hit also.

So, last night about 1 am, the phone started ringing. First Bill's work line, then the home phone - then his cell rang, finally he got up and got them answered (obviously it wasn't for me, so why should I answer it) and it was the police and they wanted him outside....

Apparently crazy robber lady was out again. And this time she was caught in the act. There were 5 cop cars outside and one screaming lady who apparently only spoke Spanish - face down on the concrete. Our neighbor, the one I call "sarge" for many reasons, saw her and called the cops. This time she went so far as to break the glass out of Bill's work van. My car was fine though. She said she saw someone and came down to check it out. However, my CVS card and Bill's work CC was in her wallet, and misc cable tools were in her possession. I think she had someone in a car with her, but either they got away, or I didn't see them. I was certain that the perps were junior high boys, apparently I was wrong...However, now my story about the break-ins doesn't sound so strange though. It was really all very strange. Nice story though....cr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-51417163619562351822009-02-04T12:03:00.000-08:002009-02-04T12:24:15.241-08:00<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFKdryHNGL1Drl62LkseZgSuvYMXe8azpfsm_-y0fYy1Zbx94rJxINNbKH0svmpodjzecNhPsCP09YOkcIwNG6nXNR44y7pEF35pnhJymngKPTE7KHaN0nPvgNtV0c4WMrd0nrrQr4hHk/s320/kids+xmas.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299035502011855618" />
So, it has been a veryb long time since I have written. Life started happening, we all went back to school, and everything got busy.

I am doing well, I have been very busy at school, on and off I have taken on a few principal type responsibilities. I have done quite a bit of scheduling, and
what I call "surveillance" - and I am enrolled in our Admin Development Series. It takes time, but I actually kinda like it, so it works for me.

The kids are busy with school and friends. Doni has her first dance on Friday, well, the first one she is actually going to anyway. Ian is in Pre-School - and loves it. He is learning about farm animals and presidents - interesting combination, I think. Kati is loving school. Doni moved downstairs, so now Kati and Ian both have their own rooms, they are still sharing a bed though - if you know of an extra twin bed anywhere, let us know.... This is the first time that Kati has had her own room, so it will be interesting when she actually starts sleeping in her own bed.

Ian had his 4th birthday last week. I managed to be completely sick, so he didn't actually have a party. If you have been around him at all in the last several months you would know he was planning to have it at Chucky Cheese....he was said that it didn't happen, but we hit the McDonald's PlayPlace last weekend and seems to be appeased. I think he is still expecting a party though. He told me last night we could have my party at Chucky Cheese if I wanted to, yeah, I don't think so.... He did get a Choo Car tent for his bed (Lightening McQueen of Cars), so he and Kati have been sleeping in style. It is rather funny to see him, Kati, Wendy (the Lab) and the Cat all under this tent designed for a twin bed...They snuggle.

Well, I am checking out for now. I promise to drop a note sooner this time. Love and Kisses...Jencr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-20627476325932685532008-08-21T14:18:00.000-07:002008-08-21T15:00:08.821-07:00Enough About Me, So Tell Me, What Do You Think About Me?<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwjX4E8C5CPXHJEa7yzmCD0CYvwHZ40NnLaSf5wf9YW9f6c2wCAtKrmx3YK1a-x-6Nm15BMkh1z3Rxj4Tq9jDTD8wVohPKLf4_K8DD20MO1QVyA-DKr_O1UQsnD_G1bZ1O34q3VWyS328/s320/leu.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237091422270497698" />
Well, school is on a roll, and life has some semblance of normalcy. Ian's shoulder is well on the mend. The sling is off and he is back to full speed, when he runs in to the wall, or the door though, we pull out the Tylenol. Mostly he is in good shape though.

Doni is loving school. Nough said.

Kati is loving school. She has a new teacher, one that is even new to the building. Oh Cool.

Me, yeah, school is good. I have been taking a bit more of a leadership role, and have raided mom's closet for appropriate clothing. She would not be one to waste good fashion I think we can all agree. It was a bit hard to take some of her favorites, many are still left hanging, but papa shakes his head and pats me on the back. He understands the pain of moving on, even when its the right thing to do. He also understands I am in no hurry. These last few days have been very hard. Toward the end of the summer I was actually getting to sleep without crying, but lately its been harder. Partly I think it is because it is the anniversary of so many last moments, partly because she belongs in the classroom, and partly because she is my mommy. I don't actually know how to get through all the sadness, but I also don't think I have much of an option. My family needs me, and I can honor her most by moving on.

Well, this blog has been mostly about me. I have been reading a book about Zen, and it is challenging me to look for the meaning in my emotions and actions. One of the items I have no faced was the openness of admitting my sadness. I have said I am doing okay, and I am fine so many times I almost believe it, until I quiet down and think. The truth is, I am still sad, sometimes. And sometimes I am strong, and sometimes I am happy, and often I am funny...at least I think so. Just in case you were wondering what it feels like to lose your mom about the time she retires and I can fully appreciate the free babysitting...cr8rthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16143861259795452374noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950221732163052579.post-32454919332385184252008-08-05T19:15:00.000-07:002008-08-05T19:26:02.999-07:00Seeing Right Through the Matter Well, I promised pictures, and this is the best I could do. We took her to Marigolds for a spot of pie, it was a nice visit. She is struggling with her memory, originally we were going to visit Denton, but her directions were all wrong, and I didn't have the heart to tell her, so when she suggested we just stop by a garage sale instead, I agreed, and we avoided getting lost all together.

We finished Friday at the Washington County Fair with Gramma and Grandpa Dixon. Kati and Ian jumped on inflatable big thingys until they could just jump no more, Doni was just too cool for such nonsense, however, it became a great deal more interesting as the night moved on and the boys came out...Now you would think that those events would make an exciting enough weekend, but we had to Perkinsize it.

Saturday afternoon out at the farm I took the Ian and Kati out the pet the horses, and everything was fine, right up until it wasn't. Something spooked one of the horses and it knocked Ian over. The horse then proceeded to trample on him. Iam took a front hoof directly on the chest, and the got kicked and rolled as the horse ran over him. I dove on top of him, and got him moved before any more damage could be done. Of course, after I grabbed him I thought shit, what if his back or neck are hurt, but I just ran. I got the kids out and ran him into the barn to check him out. He was screaming, so the lungs were good. After I laid him on his back he seemed a bit okay, but his right collar bone bent in a few too many places. Dad and I took him to the ER.

Marysville has a very small town ER. As I have been to many ER's in Kansas, this one was really, un-High Tech. But once they figured out Dad and I were not kidding, they became much more helpful, and things progressed. Within an hour, we where in and out. Ian came out of that horrific event with a broken collar bone, and a few scrapes. They put his arm in a sling and tried to send us on our way. Ian had to correct the Dr though. His arm was FINE, it was his SHOULDER that hurt. So after a medicinal band-aid on his shoulder, and another discussion with the DR about how this would not work because SPIDERMAN needs 2 ARMS to FLY, we headed home with some tylenol and an ice pack.

Dad had offered to let me change before we left, and I just looked at him and said, THIS IS NOT A FASHION SHOW, and we went on our way. After we left the hospital I looked down. I was mud and road rash from head to toe, and there was some horse poop mixed in. I was truly a mess. I let Dad go into the store to pick up the Motrin.

Ian is doing well, he has a sling and needs to keep that arm immobile for 4 days, and then he can start using it a bit. But he can be as active as he feels. He is bruised and covered in BATMAN Band-Aids. I hope to have the X-Ray pics to post soon. When I asked for the x-rays to take to our Dr, he laughed and commented this would be a great Scrapbooking page....I TOTALLY FELT OUTTED......But I got em......Chat later.
